Fatbergs are the nemesis of most drainage engineers. TV news stations often feature stories of massive fatbergs that are blocking Victorian London drains. Take a look at this BBC example.
Fatbergs aren’t just restricted to main drains though. Small domestic drains are also susceptible to fatbergs. Especially if the drainage system is old and the pipework is coated in scale.
Thankfully, in this job we managed to clear the blockage and clean the scale using the high pressure water jet.
After this the drains flowed like new and the client was delighted.
In summary, make sure that you dispose of fat and oil in an air-tight container in the bin. Never dispose of it down the sink or toilet.
It’s also unlikely that you’ll be able to remove a fatberg without specialist tools such as a high pressure jet, CCTV drainage inspection equipment and an industrial rotary machine.
